Antigua Travel Guide

Antigua is surrounded by an emerald, sapphire, aqua (substitute your own interpretation) ring of sea which never fails to stun visitors to this beautiful Caribbean island. Visitors may enjoy the warm waters from any one of 365 beaches (one for each day of the year). As well as spectacular beaches, the coastline of Antigua is indented with many bays and harbours and covers 108 square miles.

To really make the most of your Antigua holiday there are many excellent resorts and accommodations offering fine food, top-notch spas and fantastic water sports including sailing, windsurfing and diving and snorkeling - Antigua boasts hundreds of wrecks and offers good shelf diving.

One of Antigua's unexpected delights is the national park which contains Nelson's Dockyard which is the only existing Georgian naval dockyard which takes it's name from England's maritime hero. Built in 1725, Nelson's Dockyard was once England's most important naval outpost in the Caribbean and one can close your eyes and imagine working frigates, schooners, sloops and cutters. Buildings at Nelson Dockyard are signposted with their dates of origin and former uses such as Sawpit Shed to the Copper and Lumber Store. Each April the dockyard comes alive with Antiguas's annual Sailing Week which is an international event over 5 days in which more than 1500 sailors compete in a high-speed competition from the dockyard to Dickenson Bay and back. April also features the more graceful Classic Yacht Regatta which provides a more pleasing visual attraction as these yachts' curving sails are rustled by the gentle Antiguan breeze.

For those who prefer land-based exploration Antigua has some beautiful countryside where you may discover overhanging mango, wild almond and papaya trees as well as banana plants. Eventually you will come across the island's main town, St. John's, which offers colourful buildings rising from the harbour and its twin-spired cathedral. You may also discover in St. John's the Antigua and Barbude Museum which displays artefacts form the 2 islands' history as well as the cricket bat of Sir Vivian Richards, the island's most famous sportsman. Back out in the country you are bound to come across reminders of Antigua's past in the shape of almost one hundred towers which are the remains of it's sugar mills. At Betty's Hope, which was founded in the 1650's, twin mills have been restored to working condition complete with antique sugarcane-crushing equipment, and the experience is enhanced in the visitor centre with pictures, maps and models.

Of course if you are after utter tranquility then head across to Barbuda, just 3 hours by boat or 20 minutes by air, which is positively relaxed and offers some of the most beautiful coral pink sandy beaches (from the tiny pink coral shells) in the world. Bird lovers will enjoy watching the Frigate birds at the Codrington Lagoon Sanctuary.

The international airport, VC Bird International, lies around 5 miles from St. John's and 14 miles from English Harbour and those travellers arriving and requiring onward transfers can organise these at the taxi dispatcher's desk - fares are fixed and should be agreed beforehand. When leaving Antigua a departure tax of US$14 is payable.

Flight time from the UK to Antigua is approximately 8 or 9 hours. Antiguan time is 4 hours behind GMT. Currency in Antigua is the Eastern Caribbean Dollar.
