York Viking Festival

The Jorvik Viking Centre Annual Viking Festival celebrates its 25th anniversary in 2010 commencing on 13 February to co-incide with the half-term school holidays. The Viking Festival is one of many York festivals that have built up an enviable reputation around the world.

Hundreds of Vikings from around the world will descend upon York to take part in action packed events including a bloody battle, a fireworks display, longship racing on the Ouse, an atmospheric evening of candle-lit poetry aand many other exciting events. You may also enjoy a dramatic reconstruction which relates the story of the build-up and aftermath of the Battle of Woden’s Field in 910AD, which left three Viking kings dead. In York, Earl Ealdred and his allies prepare for a spectacular funeral, in which the bodies of all three late kings are placed on board a longship to be sent in flames to Valhalla, which is the afterlife for Viking heroes. For more information on this year’s festival visit the website of Jorvik Viking Centre.
