The Latvian capital Riga has topped the Post Office Money City Costs Barometer making it the best value European city destination for 2012. It is the second year running that Riga has been acclaimed as the best value European city destination.
In second place came the capital of Hungary, Budapest. British visitors to Budapest have seen Sterling rise by almost 20% since the spring of 2011 making it a great choice for bargain conscious travellers. And for Yorkshire travellers this is great news with the recent addition of flights from Leeds Bradford to Budapest giving us some excellent bargain city breaks to Budapest.
Eastern Europe dominated the top five cheap city destinations in Europe with Tallinn the only eurozone city to make the top five, coming in third place behind Budapest. Warsaw and Prague make up the rest of the top five.
Its interesting to look at the survey and compare the total price of the shopping basket in London, which has a total cost of £249.40 against Riga (£121.47), Budapest (£129.72), Tallinn (£134.83), Warsaw (£142.33), Prague (£144.88). We should also bear in mind that the basket includes one top museum and one top art gallery – both of which are free in London!
Other interesting results show that a bottle of lager can be bought in Lisbon for £1.08 but you will pay almost £6 in Stockholm. Accommodation in the top five is also around half the price of comparable hotels in London.
