Day Trips From Amsterdam

When people visit The Netherlands it is usually to the beautiful city of Amsterdam, from Amsterdam you are in easy reach of many smaller towns and cities, below are a few of our favourite.

Zaandam

Zaandam is north of Amsterdam and can be reached in 13 minutes by train from Amsterdam Centraal Station. A popular attraction here is Zaanse Schans, it gives you an accurate representation of what life was like in The Netherlands during the 17th and 18th centuries. It has a collection of well preserved windmills and houses and several museums including a bakery museum, windmill museum and the Albert Heijn museum shop which was the birthplace for The Netherlands’ most famous supermarket chain.

Hoofddorp

Hoofddorp is a 25 minute train ride from Amsterdam. Every Friday there is a market with over 100 stalls selling food, fresh produce, flowers, clothes and more, this is very popular with locals. The Historisch Museum Haarlemmermeer is a popular attraction which tells you about the history of the Dutch reclamation of Haarlemmermeer.

Haarlem

Haarlem is a 15 minute train ride from Amsterdam. The medieval city is the capital of the North Holland province and it is the main trading centre for tulips. One of Haarlem’s most famous landmarks is the De Adriaan windmill, the viewing platform which is 12 metres above the ground offers stunning views of the city and the river. On Saturday’s the Netherlands finest markets takes place in the main square Grote Markt.

Amstelveen

Amstelveen is located to the south of Amsterdam and is 35 minutes away by tram. There is a mall Stadshart Amstelveen which has over 200 shops including department stores, there is also numerous bars and restaurants. Amstelveen has more than 20 parks which you can explore by foot or by bike.

Zandvoort aan Zee

Zandvoort aan Zee is a beach resort in the North Holland province which is very popular in the summer months. It is a short 25 minute train journey from Amsterdam. The beach is 9km in length and there are plenty of things to do here, kite surfing, windsurfing and various other water sports are available. There is also a casino and world famous racing track here.
