AMAWaterways river cruise ships have earned six of the top ten positions in the third edition of the Berlitz: River Cruising in Europe & the USA travel guide. Douglas Ward, the book’s renowned author and cruise expert has reviewed 320 river cruise ships and in his 2018-19 edition awarded 6 of the top 10 ships to AMAWaterways – a stunning feat and a strong indication of it’s quality.
The beauty of a river cruise is that it takes you closer to the destination and allows you to step foot in many countries within a short span of time, and all without having to unpack and repack. As AMAWaterways demonstrate, European rivers have always been the source of life across the continent and you can follow in the footsteps (or wake) along these rivers as you head right into the heart of the destination.
AMAWaterways was founded in 2002 by Kristin Karst, Jimmy Murphy and Rudi Schreiner and they wanted to create a river cruise line that they would enjoy themselves, with a mission to make their guests feel at home. They did this by spending time on the design of their cabins creating spacious areas with large marble bathrooms, with warm hand-picked colours to enable guests to feel at home whilst away from home.
However, AMAWaterways take most pride in their staff and as co-founder Kirstin explains, they choose them by their attitude – all the rest can be taught. This underpins their other great objective, and by selecting a great crew they ensure that every touch point or interaction delights AMAWaterways guests and their passion is what really makes the difference to their guests.
The cruise experience goes beyond the hardware of the ships; you really get under the skin of the destination by spending time either leisurely or a little more actively (European ships carry bicycles for those that want to explore on two wheels). Evenings in the city can also be part of the AMAWaterways experience, with most ships departing at midnight it gives plenty of time to enjoy doing what the locals do.
Back on board, AMAWaterways bring the flavour of the destination with musical performances, dancing and of course fantastic cuisine which is inspired by the local produce selected by the chef from his visits to local markets and villages along the cruise route.
In between all of these activities guests also need time to relax. And one of the best places to do this on an AMAWaterways river cruise is the sun deck. As well as a great swimming pool, it’s the perfect venue to socialise over a drink and swap tales with fellow guests whilst you enjoy the scenery of a river cruise.
