Norwich 'The City of Stories'

East Anglia can often be overlooked when people consider short breaks in the UK, possibly through lack of awareness as to how charming a weekend in Norfolk or Suffolk is. From the lovely countryside, peaceful quaint villages with pastel coloured houses, to seaside towns full of character and some famous beach resorts to boot, East Anglia is a destination to consider when planning your next weekend away.

Norwich and Ipswich are the 2 main conurbations in East Anglia and are similar in size. But it is Norwich which we are concerned with in this article and how the city has found its place as a cultural destination due it’s long standing literary connections.

Norwich became the first Unesco City of Literature in England in 2012 and continues to nurture contemporary writers through their Young Ambassador which also encourages young people to share their love of reading, writing, books as well as their creative ideas with schools and wider community. Norwich is also home to the University of East Anglia which runs a Creative Writing course.

But The City of Stories is one of Norwich’s most successful and popular initiatives. Featuring local characterstalking about food and drink, literature, culture, green spaces and shopping. There is a range of videos which you can view on YouTube similar to the one below.

Of course Norwich has more than just literature to offer. You can also visit venues such as Norwich Castle Museum & Art Gallery, Norwich Cathedral, The Assembly House as well as the Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts which houses works by Picasso, Giacometti and Bacon in a Norman Foster building.

Norwich Museum Services also organises various exhibitions as well as having one million exhibits which can be viewed with a curator by appointment..

And don’t forget when visiting Norwich you are close to one of the Queen’s homes at Sandringham, The Norfolk Broads, Cromer and Great Yarmouth.
