With a population of over 1.7 million people Budapest is by far the largest city in Hungary, and also its capital. Embracing both sides of the River Danube it is a city full of vibrant culture and great sights to see!
When you visit Budapest you are actually visiting two cities in one, because Budapest is made up of Buda and Pest, with the Danube flowing between them, along a stretch of 28 kilometers. Buda is built on a hill, on the western bank of the river and forms the historical part of the city. Pest stands on a plain and it’s more businesslike with its shops and boulevards. You can walk between the two connected, but still very different parts of the city on magnificent bridges. The city on a whole consists of 23 districts.
There are some great places to visit in Budapest, so whether you are planning to visit for a few days of even a week you will never be bored! You can walk along Andrássy avenue which is more than 2 km long, connecting the city centre with the City Park. It is lined with elegant palaces dating from the 19th century, a couple of museums, luxury boutiques, and some fine restaurants. Two must-see sights are the Opera House and the House of Terror Museum. Also be sure to pay a visit to the Buda Castle District with the Royal Palace, the Matthias Church, Fishermen’s Bastion, and several museums (both large and unique ones) as well as some nice selection of restaurants and cafes.
If you want to see the most romantic face of Budapest take a night cruise on the Danube. There are 3 sight seeing boat tours per day, each with a 4 course meal option on board. Although Budapest is striking at night with the bridges and buildings illuminated, you can also have a memorable sight seeing boat tour at daytime.
