Vienna is the capital of Austria and it is also the country’s largest city and the largest German speaking city in the world. It is in the east of Austria and lies close to the borders of Hungary, Czech Republic and Slovakia. The city is made up of 23 districts.
One of Vienna’s most popular attractions is the Wiener Riesenrad, a Ferris wheel which is located in the Prater amusement park. It was constructed in 1897 and was the world’s tallest Ferris wheel between 1920 and 1985. When it was first built it had 30 gondolas but it was damaged during world war 2 and was rebuilt with only 15 gondolas. Another popular attraction is the Donauturm, Danube Tower in English. It is located at the back of the Danube river and is the tallest structure in Austria, it is 252m tall. The towers observation deck is at 150m and takes 35 seconds in the elevator to get there. There is also 2 revolving restaurants at 160m and 169m that offer stunning views of the capital.
A must when in Vienna is to go to a Viennese Coffee House, they serve a range of coffee drinks and pastries, a Viennese speciality is Einspänner Coffee, it is a strong black coffee topped with whipped cream and powdered sugar. One of the most famous specialities in Austria is Sachertorte, it is a dense chocolate cake with apricot jam on the top and then it is coated in dark chocolate icing. On 5th December it is ‘National Sachertorte Day’. It was first served at the Demel bakery and then at Hotel Sacher.
