Peru is a very popular destination in South America, and is famous for being home to such amazing landmarks and one of the wonders of the world – Machu Picchu! You will land in Lima and can fly direct from Gatwick. Lima, the capital of Peru, is a great starting point for a tour of this beautiful country. From Lima, you can fly to Cusco, and this is usually the starting point of a tour of Machu Picchu. Spending a few days in Cusco is a good way of acclimatising yourself to the high altitude, as Machu Picchu is 3400m above sea level! There is plenty to see and do in this lovely city, so you could easily spend a day or two getting to know the area, before visiting Machu Picchu. There are a number of ways to get to Machu Picchu – you could walk the Inca trail and either camp along the way or stay in lodges on the route, or you could get the train there.
Lake Titicaca is another great place to visit while you are in Peru. It sits on the border between peru and Bolivia in the Andes, and is also the sacred place of the Incas and home to a number of natural and artificial islands. The most famous of these is the Uros Islands; Uros a community of pre-Incan people who live on the floating islands made from reeds. You can visit them and see their fascinating way of life on a boat trip from the city of Puno.
