Great news for those wanting a cheap getaway this summer, as holiday spend is much less this year in Europe, according to a report from the Post Office which found that prices were cheaper in all the popular destinations it surveyed except for one.
The biggest fall in prices were found to be in the Algarve and Bulgaria, where essential holiday costs such as the price of eating out and sun cream were a huge 22 per cent less than they were last year. Andrew Brown, of the Post Office, claimed that UK holidaymakers money will stretch a lot further this year. “Meal prices can have a big impact on the holiday budget and make a big dent in their holiday finances for people who plan to eat out every night,” he said. “In the Algarve a three-course evening meal with wine costs just over £16 for two people, while lunch comes in at £12. That’s less than half the price in other Eurozone resorts including Ibiza, Sorrento and Nice. With this in mind, the best advice is to do some homework in advance and be aware of what to expect before facing the bill.”
With self catering holidays becoming more popular in Europe, this is great news for those concerned about spending too much on food on their holiday. All inclusive was always considered great value for money, but for places such as the Algarve, Bulgaria, Majorca and Menorca it is much cheaper to eat out and try a variety of restaurants, therefore improving your experience of the local cuisine and culture. Some examples of the difference in prices in various resorts, a bottle of the local beer or lager is around 59p in the Sunny Beach resort of Bulgaria but a rather pricey £3.70 in Nice. A coffee would cost a mere 52p in the Algarve, but would set you back £1.87 in Corfu.
Of course it is not just food and drink UK holidaymakers can save money on; the price of sun-cream is £3.53 in Sunny Beach compared to £14.93 in Ibiza. If you want to keep those mosquitoes away, it will only cost you £1.16 for insect repellent in Paphos but will be £5.22 in Sorrento.
Thanks to the strong pound, significant savings are also possible in many other popular resorts, such as in Corfu, where prices were down by nearly 20 per cent, and also in Menorca and Croatia, where prices had fallen by around 16 per cent since last summer.
