Many people have the idea that going abroad now is too expensive due to the recent referendum causing the pound to decrease meaning you won’t get less foreign currency. but this isn’t true. Prices while abroad in some resorts are actually cheaper now then they were 2 years ago.
Every year the Post Office conducts a survey of holiday costs, comparing prices for ‘a basket of goods’ this includes; a cup of coffee, a bottle of local beer/ lager, bottle/ can of Coca Cola or Pepsi, a glass of wine, 1.5l bottle of mineral water, 200ml bottle of sun cream, pack of 20 Malboro cigarettes and a 3 course evening meal for 2 with a bottle of house wine.
The 5 cheapest resorts in Europe this year are; Algarve – Portugal, Sunny Beach – Bulgaria, Costa del Sol – Spain, Crete – Greece and Paphos – Cyprus.
Due to what has happened in Turkey and Egypt their tourism has reduced dramatically, making more people want to go to the western med for their holidays, this year availability as been very low in this area. This is making people think of other places like Sunny Beach. The average price for a holiday here for a week with baggage and transfers is £339pp and in Greece it is £351.


The Algarve is in the south of Portugal, it is very popular with people wanting a beach or golf holiday. There are plenty of hotels, bars and restaurants available and it is an ideal destination for couples or families. The Algarve was the cheapest of all 5 resorts, while you are there prices for eating and drinking are very reasonable, a 3 course meal for 2 with a bottle of wine costs £22, a bottle of mineral water is 20p and a glass of wine is £1.21.
Sunny Beach is a purpose built resort along the Black Sea coast, it is the most famous resort in Bulgaria. It has numerous bars, restaurants, clubs and a fun fair to keep you entertained, perfect for young people or families who want to make the most of their holidays. You can pay as little as 64p for a bottle of beer in Sunny Beach, other items that are considerably cheaper than in other resorts are sun cream which is £3.83 for a 200ml bottle and cigarettes which are £2.13 for a pack of 20.

Costa del Sol literally translates as ‘coast of the sun’ it’s located in the south of Spain. Popular resorts here are; Marbella, Nerja Torremolinos, Benalmádena and Fuengirola. Coming to one of these resorts is popular with groups, couples and families due to the short flight time from the UK. The ‘basket of goods’ here came out at £36.80 in total, so you can see prices here are very fair.
Crete is the largest and most popular of the Greek islands, It’s capital Heraklion is home to the busiest Greek airport outside Athens, it’s beautiful beaches make it a popular destination for families, couples or groups. A 3 course meal for 2 people with a bottle of wine costs on average about £24.27 and a 1.2l bottle of water is 24p!

Paphos is in south west Cyprus, the beaches here have a Blue Flag status and has plenty of water sports available. It is an ideal destination for young couples and families. There is a wide range of bars and restaurants to choose from, a 3 course meal for 2 comes in on average at £25 and a 1.5l bottle of mineral water was 36p.
