Puerto del Carmen at a glance

Puerto del Carmen is Lanzarote's oldest and largest holiday resort. It began as a small fishing village and now stretches for several miles along the island's sunny south-east coast, joined together by Avenida de las Playas, a palm-lined seafront promenade backed by golden beaches, restaurants, bars and shops. The original harbour, known as the Old Town, is still full of character, and the airport is only a short drive away.

Is Puerto del Carmen right for you?

Puerto del Carmen is the resort that has it all in one place: long sandy beaches, a flat seafront promenade that is perfect for an evening stroll, and more restaurants and bars than anywhere else on Lanzarote. It is lively without being overwhelming, and because it is so spread out, you can choose a busy spot near the centre or a quieter base at either end.

The livelier part is around the centre of Avenida de las Playas, while the Old Town harbour has a more traditional feel. Playa de los Pocillos, towards the airport end, is more relaxed and popular with families. With a transfer of only a few minutes, it is also ideal for a short break or a late-arriving flight.

Ideal if you want

  • A very short airport transfer
  • Golden sand beaches within walking distance
  • A wide choice of restaurants and bars
  • Year-round sunshine and winter warmth

  • An easy base for exploring the whole island

Beaches in Puerto del Carmen

Playa Grande

The main beach, right in the centre of the resort, with soft golden sand, sunbeds and parasols for hire, showers and lifeguards in season. Bars and cafés line the promenade behind it.

Playa Chica

A small, sheltered cove framed by black volcanic rock, with calm, clear water. It is one of the best-known spots on the island for snorkelling and diving.

Playa de los Pocillos

The longest and most spacious of the resort's beaches, with a more relaxed feel. A good choice for families and for long walks along the sand.

Playa de Matagorda

At the airport end of the resort, quieter and less crowded, with a gently sloping shore and the seafront promenade alongside.

Families and kids

Rancho Texas Lanzarote Park, with its animals and shows, is a short drive away. Calm beaches, boat trips and dolphin-watching cruises are popular with all ages, and the aquapark in Costa Teguise is an easy day out.

Couples and adults

Try a beginner dive at Playa Chica, take a catamaran trip to the Papagayo beaches, or visit the vineyards of La Geria to taste the island's volcanic wines. In the evening, stroll the promenade and finish with dinner by the harbour.

The volcanic landscapes of Timanfaya National Park are around half an hour away. César Manrique's Jameos del Agua, the Cueva de los Verdes, the Mirador del Río viewpoint and the island of La Graciosa all make memorable days out.

Shopping and evenings

Eating out in Puerto del Carmen

You will find almost every kind of food along Avenida de las Playas, from British favourites and steakhouses to Italian, Indian and Asian restaurants. For something more local, head to the Old Town harbour, where seafront restaurants serve fresh fish, grilled octopus, papas arrugadas with mojo sauce and local Malvasía wine.

Self-catering is easy too, with supermarkets throughout the resort, and many of the apartments are within walking distance of the beach.

Puerto del Carmen FAQs

Is Puerto del Carmen a good place for a holiday?

Yes, for most people. It is Lanzarote's biggest and best-known resort, with several golden sand beaches, a long seafront promenade and a huge choice of restaurants and bars. It suits couples, families and groups, and it is the easiest base for a first visit to the island. If you want somewhere very quiet, Puerto Calero or Playa Blanca may suit you better.

How far is Puerto del Carmen from Lanzarote airport?

Very close. Lanzarote Airport (ACE) is only a few miles away, and the transfer by road usually takes around 10 to 15 minutes, depending on where your hotel is along the seafront. That makes it one of the shortest airport transfers in the Canary Islands.

Is Puerto del Carmen or Playa Blanca better?

It depends on what you want. Puerto del Carmen is livelier, closer to the airport and has more bars, restaurants and beach space. Playa Blanca, on the southern tip of the island, is quieter and more relaxed, with a marina and easy access to the Papagayo beaches, but the transfer takes around 35 to 40 minutes.

Is Puerto del Carmen good for families?

Yes. The beaches shelve gently, Playa Chica is a calm sheltered cove and Playa de los Pocillos is long and spacious. Rancho Texas Lanzarote Park is a short drive away, and there are plenty of apartments and family-friendly hotels with pools. Families who prefer a quieter evening can stay towards the Pocillos or Matagorda end of the resort.

Is Puerto del Carmen lively at night?

It is the liveliest resort on Lanzarote. Most of the nightlife is along Avenida de las Playas and around the Centro Atlántico area, with bars, live music, karaoke and late venues. It is still easy to have a quiet evening: the Old Town harbour is better known for seafood restaurants than for late nights.

What is the best beach in Puerto del Carmen?

Playa Grande is the main beach, right in the middle of the resort, with soft golden sand, sunbeds and lifeguards in season. Playa Chica is smaller and sheltered, and popular with snorkellers and divers. Playa de los Pocillos is the longest and usually the most spacious.

Is Puerto del Carmen hilly?

The seafront promenade is flat and easy to walk. Some hotels and apartments sit on the slope behind Avenida de las Playas or above the Old Town, which can mean an uphill walk back from the beach. If walking is a concern, ask us and we will suggest places close to the seafront.

What is the weather like in Puerto del Carmen in winter?

Mild and mostly dry. Daytime temperatures in winter are usually around 20 to 22°C, rising to the high 20s in summer. Lanzarote can be breezy, but Puerto del Carmen is one of the more sheltered resorts on the island, which is why it is so popular for winter sun.

Is there a market in Puerto del Carmen?

Yes, a weekly market is held near the Old Town harbour on Fridays, with local produce, crafts and souvenirs. The large Sunday market in Teguise, the island's old capital, is an easy trip by bus or excursion.
