Los Cristianos at a glance

Los Cristianos began life as a small fishing village and has grown into one of Tenerife's favourite resorts without losing its working harbour or its town-centre feel. Fishing boats and island ferries come and go beside a sheltered sandy beach, and a flat seafront promenade leads past cafés and restaurants to Playa de las Vistas and on to Playa de las Américas. It is easy-going, great for winter sun and one of the quickest resorts to reach from the airport.

Is Los Cristianos right for you?

Los Cristianos suits people who want sunshine, a good beach and a relaxed pace. Days revolve around the beach, the harbour and long lunches, and evenings are about a stroll along the promenade and dinner rather than late nights. Many visitors come back every winter, and it is a comfortable choice for families with young children thanks to its calm, shallow water.

The seafront and town centre are flat, which makes it easy to get around, though some hotels sit further up the hillside. It is not the place for big nightclubs or a party scene, but Playa de las Américas is close by if you fancy a livelier night out, and the ferry port makes it the natural base for a day trip to La Gomera.

Playa de Los Cristianos

The town beach, right beside the harbour, with calm, gently shelving water that is ideal for young children. Sunbeds, showers and cafés are all close at hand, and you can watch the fishing boats and ferries come and go.

Playa de las Vistas

A long sweep of golden sand protected by breakwaters, stretching from Los Cristianos towards Playa de las Américas. Wide, sunny and well equipped, with plenty of space even in busy months.

Things to do in Los Cristianos

Families and kids

Siam Park and Aqualand are a short drive away, and Monkey Park and Jungle Park make easy half-day trips. Back in town, the calm water at Playa de Los Cristianos is perfect for paddling and sandcastles.

Couples and adults

Whale and dolphin watching trips leave from the harbour, as pilot whales live year-round off this coast. Walk up Montaña de Guaza for views over the bay, enjoy a spa day at your hotel or watch the sunset from a seafront bar.

Day trips

Take the ferry to La Gomera for its laurel forests and pretty villages, or head inland to Mount Teide National Park and ride the cable car. Los Gigantes, Masca and the old town of La Orotava are all within reach.

Shopping and evenings

Browse the shops and cafés around the town centre and the busy Sunday market, then stroll the promenade at sunset. Evenings are relaxed, with bars and live music, and the nightlife of Playa de las Américas is close by.

Eating out

The seafront has a good choice of international restaurants, from British breakfasts to Italian and Indian. For fresh fish and seafood, head to the restaurants around the harbour, and look out for Canarian favourites such as papas arrugadas (salted wrinkly potatoes) with red and green mojo sauces, grilled local cheese and fish of the day.

Some of the best-value local cooking is found a street or two back from the beach. With plenty of supermarkets and a large market, Los Cristianos also works well for a self-catering holiday.

Getting there

Fly to Tenerife South airport, with flights from airports across the UK all year round. The transfer to Los Cristianos takes around 15 to 20 minutes, and taxis are metered and easy to find.

Los Cristianos FAQs

Is Los Cristianos a nice place to stay?

Yes. It grew up around a fishing harbour and still has more of a town feel than the purpose-built resorts nearby, with a sandy, sheltered beach, a flat seafront promenade and plenty of cafés and restaurants. It is popular with couples, families with young children and winter-sun visitors who come back year after year.

Is Los Cristianos quiet?

It is calmer than its neighbours, especially in the evenings. There are bars and live music, but no big club scene. If you want nightlife, Playa de las Américas is a short walk or taxi ride away along the seafront.

Should I stay in Los Cristianos or Playa de las Américas?

Choose Los Cristianos for a more relaxed, traditional base with a harbour and town centre. Choose Playa de las Américas for more entertainment, nightlife and a bigger choice of large resort hotels. They are joined by Playa de las Vistas and the promenade, so you can easily enjoy both.

Should I stay in Los Cristianos or Costa Adeje?

Costa Adeje is more upmarket, with more five-star resorts and smart beaches. Los Cristianos is usually better value and feels more like a real town, with the harbour, shops and local restaurants all within walking distance.

How far is Los Cristianos from the airport?

Tenerife South airport is around 15 to 20 minutes away by road, one of the shortest transfers in the Canary Islands.

What is the best beach in Los Cristianos?

Playa de las Vistas is the biggest, with a long stretch of golden sand and calm water protected by breakwaters. Playa de Los Cristianos, beside the harbour, is smaller and very family friendly, with gently shelving water.

Can you get the ferry to La Gomera from Los Cristianos?

Yes. Ferries leave Los Cristianos harbour several times a day for San Sebastián de La Gomera, taking about 50 minutes on the fast ferry, which makes it an easy and popular day trip. There are also less frequent sailings to La Palma and El Hierro.

Is Los Cristianos hilly?

The seafront, harbour and town centre are flat and easy to get around, and the promenade is popular with visitors who use mobility scooters. Some hotels and apartments are set further back up the hillside, so check the location if you would rather avoid an uphill walk.

When is the Los Cristianos market?

A large street market is held in Los Cristianos on Sunday mornings, selling crafts, clothing, souvenirs and local produce. It gets busy, so go early.

Is Los Cristianos good for winter sun?

Very. The south of Tenerife has some of the most reliable winter weather in Europe, with daytime temperatures typically around 20 to 23°C from November to March and plenty of sunshine.
