North or south Tenerife?

The south

Most visitors stay in the south, and for good reason. It is the sunniest and driest part of the island, close to Tenerife South airport, and has the biggest choice of hotels, beaches, restaurants and attractions. Costa Adeje, Playa de las Américas and Los Cristianos run into one another along the coast, so you can easily explore all three.

The north

The north is greener, cooler and more traditional, with historic towns such as La Laguna and La Orotava, banana plantations and mountain walks. Puerto de la Cruz is the main resort. It gets more cloud than the south, so it suits visitors who want scenery and culture more than guaranteed beach days.

Things to do in Tenerife

Families and kids

Siam Park in Costa Adeje is one of Europe's best-known waterparks, and Aqualand is close by. In the north, Loro Parque in Puerto de la Cruz has animal shows and a huge penguin enclosure. Whale and dolphin watching trips from the south coast are a hit with all ages.

Mount Teide

The volcano at the centre of the island sits in a national park that is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. A cable car climbs most of the way up, with huge views over the island. Going to the very summit needs a free permit booked in advance. Take a warm layer, as it is much colder at the top.

Day trips

Explore the old town of La Laguna, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, or the pretty coastal town of Garachico. Walk the Masca gorge or the Anaga mountains, take a boat beneath the Los Gigantes cliffs, or catch the ferry from Los Cristianos to the neighbouring island of La Gomera.

Evenings and shopping

Playa de las Américas has the liveliest nightlife, while Costa Adeje and Los Cristianos have relaxed seafront bars and restaurants. Santa Cruz, the capital, is good for shopping and hosts one of the world's biggest carnivals every February.

Playa de las Vistas, Los Cristianos

A long, sheltered golden beach linking Los Cristianos and Playa de las Américas, good for families.

Tenerife weather

Tenerife is warm all year. Winter days in the south are typically around 20–22°C, spring and autumn reach the mid-20s, and summer is often around 28–30°C. Rain is rare in the south and falls mainly in winter.

The island has noticeably different weather from one side to the other. The south and west coasts are the sunniest and driest. The north catches more cloud from the trade winds, which keeps it green but cooler, and Mount Teide can have snow in winter while the beaches stay warm.

Best time to visit Tenerife

  • Winter sun: November to March, with the best chance of warmth close to the UK.
  • Fewer crowds: spring and autumn outside the school holidays.
  • Hottest and warmest sea: July to September.
  • Carnival: February, in Santa Cruz.

Most UK flights land at Tenerife South (TFS), around 20 minutes from Costa Adeje, Playa de las Américas and Los Cristianos. Tenerife North (TFN) is closer to Puerto de la Cruz but has few direct UK flights.

Getting around

Passports and money

UK visitors do not need a visa for holidays. Your passport must be less than 10 years old on arrival and valid for 3 months after you leave. The currency is the euro, and Conexo can supply your euros and prepaid currency cards.

Time and food

Tenerife is on the same time as the UK all year. Try papas arrugadas with mojo sauce, fresh fish and a barraquito, the island's layered coffee. All inclusive hotels are widely available.
