Playa de las Américas is known as Tenerife's party resort, and the Veronicas strip and Starco centre do stay busy until the early hours. But that is only one corner of a large resort. Away from the bars you will find calm, family-friendly beaches, hotels with big pools and kids' clubs, and an easy-going seafront that is lovely for an evening stroll.
Choose where you stay carefully and it works for almost anyone. Families and couples who want peaceful nights often pick hotels towards Playa del Camisón and Los Cristianos, or up by the golf course. Groups who want to be in the thick of it stay close to Veronicas. If you would like a more polished, quieter feel throughout, Costa Adeje next door may suit you better.
Playa de las Américas sits in the middle of a continuous stretch of resorts linked by one long promenade, so you can easily explore its neighbours.
| Resort | Atmosphere | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Playa de las Américas | Lively and busy, with a wide choice of bars, shops and nightlife | Families, groups of friends, value and variety |
| Costa Adeje | More upmarket and relaxed, with smart promenades and large resort hotels | Couples, luxury breaks, families wanting a quieter base |
| Los Cristianos | Traditional town feel around a working harbour, calmer evenings | Couples, older travellers, winter sun stays, island hopping |
The main beach, a golden sweep protected by breakwaters, with sunbeds, lifeguards in season and water sports from pedalos to jet skis. The promenade behind is lined with bars and restaurants.
At the southern end of the resort, with soft sand, calm water and palm-lined gardens behind. A favourite with families and a more relaxed place to spend the day.
The central beaches have darker sand and some of the island's best-known surf breaks, so this is the place to book a surf lesson or watch the experts.
A long, sandy beach that links Playa de las Américas with Los Cristianos. Wide, gently shelving and easy to reach along the seafront walk.
Siam Park, one of Europe's best-known water parks, is on the edge of the resort, and Aqualand is a short drive away. Monkey Park and Jungle Park are popular half-day trips, and the calm water at Camisón and Troya is ideal for little ones.
Take a sunset catamaran or a whale and dolphin watching trip, as pilot whales live year-round off this coast. Play a round at Golf Las Américas, book a spa day at your hotel or enjoy a cocktail along the Golden Mile.
Head up to Mount Teide National Park and take the cable car towards Spain's highest peak, or catch the ferry from Los Cristianos to the green island of La Gomera. The cliffs of Los Gigantes and the village of Masca are also within easy reach.
The Golden Mile and the Safari centre have shops, cafés and restaurants for browsing in the evening. For nightlife, the Veronicas strip and Starco centre are home to bars, live music and clubs that stay open late.
You will find everything from British breakfasts and Irish bars to Italian, Indian and steakhouse restaurants along the seafront and the Golden Mile. It is worth seeking out Canarian food too: papas arrugadas (salted wrinkly potatoes) with red and green mojo sauces, grilled local cheese and fresh fish of the day.
For seafood, wander along to the harbour in Los Cristianos or take a short taxi to La Caleta, a small fishing village in Costa Adeje with seafront restaurants. Many hotels here also offer all inclusive, which is handy for families.
Fly to Tenerife South airport, with flights from airports across the UK all year round. The transfer to Playa de las Américas takes around 20 minutes, and taxis are metered and easy to find.
Yes. The beaches are sheltered by breakwaters, so the water is usually calm for paddling, and Siam Park and Aqualand are close by. Many hotels have children's pools and kids' clubs. Families who want quieter evenings tend to choose hotels away from the Veronicas strip, towards Playa del Camisón or up by the golf course.
It depends where you stay. The nightlife is concentrated around the Veronicas strip and the Starco centre, and hotels right beside them can be noisy late at night. Much of the resort is calmer than its reputation, particularly the southern end near Los Cristianos and the golf area inland.
Costa Adeje, just to the north, is generally more upmarket and quieter, with more five-star resorts. Playa de las Américas has more choice in the three and four-star range, more bars and nightlife and is usually better value. The two run into each other along the same promenade, so you can enjoy both.
Los Cristianos, to the south, grew from a fishing town and has a more relaxed, traditional feel with a busy harbour. Playa de las Américas is livelier with more entertainment. They are joined by the seafront walk and Playa de las Vistas, so it is easy to visit one from the other.
Tenerife South airport is around 20 minutes away by road, roughly 18 km. It is one of the quickest transfers in the Canary Islands.
Playa de Troya is the main beach, with golden sand, sunbeds and water sports. Playa del Camisón is calmer and popular with families, and Playa de las Vistas, shared with Los Cristianos, is long and sandy. Surfers head for the breaks near Playa de las Américas beach and El Bobo.
From hotels at the northern end of the resort it is a walk of around 15 to 20 minutes. From elsewhere a short taxi ride or the park's free bus is easier.
The south of Tenerife is warm all year. Winter daytime temperatures are typically around 20 to 23°C with plenty of sunshine, which is why the resort is popular from October to April. Summer is hotter, usually in the high 20s.
The seafront and the main hotel area are mostly flat and easy to walk. Hotels by the golf course are further inland, so the walk back from the beach is longer and uphill.
