Malaysia is split into two separate parts – West Malaysia, also known as Peninsular Malaysia, and East Malaysia, also known as Malaysian Borneo. There are 375 miles of sea between them. Peninsular Malaysia is a part of the main Southeast Asian landmass. It is smaller than Malaysian Borneo but is home to more of the population.
Malaysian Borneo is divided into two states – Sabah in the north and Sarawak in the south –as well as one small federal territory, the island of Labuan. Together they comprise a land area of around 77,000 square miles, which makes up some 60% of Malaysia as a whole. It is separated from Peninsular Malaysia by more than 375 miles of the South China Sea.
The island of Borneo is shared between three nations: Malaysia, Indonesia and the tiny country of Brunei. Malaysian Borneo occupies just over a quarter of the island. It has a population of between five and six million.
The landscape is chiefly characterised by lowland rainforest, with some dramatic areas of mountainous jungle once you head further inland. All five of Malaysia’s highest peaks are located on Borneo. The largest of these, Mount Kinabalu in Sabah, is one of the region’s biggest tourist attractions. The wilderness of Malaysian Borneo is well known for its animal and bird life, most notably playing home to orang-utans.
